Morning M.A.G.I.C for Writers
How Do You Feel When You
Wake Up in the Morning?
Are you raring to go, filled with that "today is the first day of the rest of my life!" energy and enthusiasm?
Or was it more like: "Oh God. Another damned day?"
That would be pretty typically human, wouldn't it?

Do you have the energy and drive you need to feel alive, to pursue your dreams, find the love you deserve…and most importantly, to build the writing career you desire?

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
If it is, then this might be a turning point in your life.
HI! I'M NY Times Bestselling author Steven Barnes,  and over a career publishing over THREE MILLION WORDS, Thirty novels, and working in television, film, comics, stage and radio…I'm also a black belt karate practitioner, and am married to my soulmate, the beautiful and brilliant British Fantasy Award winning novelist Tananarive Due.   I'm  going to show you how a simple, everyday morning ritual can change everything in your life.
Can I put it more clearly?

The First Hour of your day, the "Ritual" that controls your emotions, focus, and physical energy, will control the quality and production of your entire day.
The Problem Is Most Writers think that inspiration, "The Muse" and simply slogging along will allow them to tap their creative potential and build the career of their dreams.
No. It won't.
When daylight hits your eyes, do you groan and curse?
Or is your brain instantly buzzing with ideas, ready to hit the ground running?
Do you need three cups of coffee just to begin to feel alive?
When it is time to write, can you just "turn on" the flow, or do you spend an hour staring at a blank screen?
Do you REACT to your life…or CREATE it?
If your life was a story you were writing…would you be the hero, or the comic relief?
Do you go to bed at night, not having moved that book or screenplay or story forward, swearing that "Tomorrow" you'll do better, but find yourself locked into the same pattern day after day, a spiral of failure, struggle and disappointment that is getting you nowhere?

But, there is another way…imagine starting every day as if you had a magic wand that could CREATE the day you desire, the way a writer creates a scene in a movie?
Does that sound good to you?
What if there was a way to absolutely guarantee that every single day you were making progress on that writing project, even if you only had five minutes? EVERY day?
What if you could recapture the joy, creative passion and enthusiasm you felt for your writing at the beginning?
How would you like to end EVERY day knowing that you've taken critical steps toward creating or maintaining the career…the LIFE of your dreams?
What would you aspire to, if you knew you could not fail?
Who could you be if you knew the seeds of that transformation were already within you?
The Answer is here:
 Morning M.A.G.I.C. …for Writers
Show me your rituals, and I will show you your life.
What you do in the first hour of your day controls the rest of your life.
I began my own journey almost thirty-five years ago, when my Tai Chi instructor Hawkins Cheung (Bruce Lee's kung fu classmate) said that the morning was a magic time, and that if we blessed the rising sun with movement, it would change everything about the day.
And it was true: just moving the first thing in the morning seemed to make magic out of an ordinary day. But Hawkins wasn't the last teacher to give me pieces of the puzzle. As a science fiction/fantasy writer, I researched a lot of fascinating people and subjects, from Ericksonian Hypnosis to Transcultural Shamanism, from the Sweet Medicine Sundance path to warrior traditions from Africa, Asia, and Europe.  And everything I touched modified what I knew of the "Diamond Hour" of the day.
Fifteen years ago I encountered Russian body-mind secrets, and discovered the secret of changing your life in just five minute increments. Combined with Tony Robbins' thoughts on emotional focus, my Morning Ritual became…magical.
With it, I've been able to write millions of words, attract and marry my soul mate, earn three black belts and literally fulfill ALL of my childhood dreams.
I call this new way of blending writing and life…LIFEWRITING.
Most importantly, I own my life. Up or down, come what may, I know EXACTLY how to control my emotions so that every day…EVERY day, is a victorious adventure.
THOUSANDS of students have experienced the magic of Lifewriting…and you're next!
My writing has touched almost a BILLION people worldwide…but I want more than fiction now…I want to help others create the lives THEY dream of.
Your relationships. Your health. And especially, your career.
You see, while I love creating programs for everyone, and anyone, I want most to reach back to that 30-year-old guy I was, uncertain of what I wanted or how to get it…and LIGHT HIM UP!
If I could send a "message in a bottle" to that confused, frightened young man, it would be simple:
START A MORNING RITUAL. It will take between five minutes and an hour a day, and will change your life.
I've had the honor of teaching my methods to millionaires, star athletes, housewives, doctors, lawyers and active military. But it's always been most satisfying to teach WRITERS. People with the same dreams I had.
Just give me 5-60 minutes a day, and I can change your life.
If the first "Diamond Hour" of the day controls the rest of your life, then you'd better ask yourself:
What do YOU do first thing every morning? And next? And after that? Do you know the single most important thing for you to accomplish today, and have you set yourself up to do it?
...

Whether you think about it or not, we all have a "morning ritual" whether we consciously designed it or not.
But for most people, this isn't something they carefully and deliberately design to reach their goals. They lurch out of bed, groaning and complaining, and stumble into their day buffeted by happenstance.
Does this sound like you?
I've studied hundreds of peak performing individuals, and the truth is that all of them fall into the "the harder I work the luckier I get" and "Follow the patterns laid out by others. Pioneers get arrows in the butt" approach.
They're not "lucky." they aren't just "gifted"--they do different things, focus on different things, feel different things.

The Most Joyous, Self-Actualized Human beings on the planet all practice morning rituals!
I have had the blessing to study and know some of the most successful people in the world…
Writers like Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Octavia Butler, Ray Bradbury and many, many more.
Martial artists like Danny Inosanto, Bruce Lee, Musashi Miyamoto, and many more…
And thousands of other successful, happy, healthy men and women throughout history.
Your results are controlled by your actions, your actions are controlled by your emotions, and your emotions controlled by your mental focus, physical motion and spoken or mental language.
That means that if you can control these three things, you control your emotions…
You control your actions…
And for the first time in your life…you will control your results!

Stephen King:  “I have a glass of water or a cup of tea. There’s a certain time I sit down, from 8:00 to 8:30, somewhere within that half hour every morning,” he explained. “I have my vitamin pill and my music, sit in the same seat, and the papers are all arranged in the same places…The cumulative purpose of doing these things the same way every day seems to be a way of saying to the mind, you’re going to be dreaming soon.”

Ernest Hemingway:   "I write every morning"
When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write.
You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. You write until you come to a place where you still have your juice and know what will happen next and you stop and try to live through until the next day when you hit it again. You have started at six in the morning, say, and may go on until noon or be through before that.
When you stop you are as empty, and at the same time never empty but filling, as when you have made love to someone you love. Nothing can hurt you, nothing can happen, nothing means anything until the next day when you do it again. It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.

Maya Angelou:   "I usually get up at about 5:30, and I’m ready to have coffee by 6, usually with my husband. He goes off to his work around 6:30, and I go off to mine.
I keep a hotel room in which I do my work — a tiny, mean room with just a bed, and sometimes, if I can find it, a face basin. I keep a dictionary, a Bible, a deck of cards and a bottle of sherry in the room. I try to get there around 7, and I work until 2 in the afternoon.
If the work is going badly, I stay until 12:30. If it’s going well, I’ll stay as long as it’s going well. It’s lonely, and it’s marvelous. I edit while I’m working. When I come home at 2, I read over what I’ve written that day, and then try to put it out of my mind.
I shower, prepare dinner, so that when my husband comes home, I’m not totally absorbed in my work. We have a semblance of a normal life. We have a drink together and have dinner. Maybe after dinner I’ll read to him what I’ve written that day. He doesn’t comment. I don’t invite comments from anyone but my editor, but hearing it aloud is good. Sometimes I hear the dissonance; then I try to straighten it out in the morning.

Ray Bradbury, Author of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES.  “The problem with novels is that you can spend a whole year writing one and it might not turn out well because you haven’t learned to write yet. But the best hygiene for beginning writers or intermediate writers is to write a hell of a lot of short stories. If you can write one short story a week — it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start — but at least you’re practicing and at the end of the year you have 52 short stories and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. It can’t be done.
“I’ll give you a programme to follow every night. Very simple programme. For the next thousand nights, before you go to bed every night, read one short story. That will take you ten minutes, fifteen minutes…for the next 1,000 nights.”
